LOW-CARB SOURDOUGH vs KETO BREAD: WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE? Low carb and keto are often spoken about as though they are two completely separate categories, but the distinction is not always clear-cut. There is no single universally accepted definition of either approach. In general, low-carb eating may involve consuming up to around 100–150g of carbohydrates per day, while ketogenic eating plans are usually more restrictive, often allowing around 20–50g per day. However, individual targets and approaches can vary considerably. This means the difference is not simply about whether a bread is labelled “low-carb” or “keto”. It also depends on the carbohydrate content of the individual product, the portion size and how it fits within the rest of a person’s daily intake. At Robert Andrew, we offer two collections: our Low-Carb Sourdough and our Keto Range. Our Keto Range generally contains lower amounts of carbohydrate and has been developed with stricter, very-low-carbohydrate and ketogenic eating plans in mind. However, some products from our Low-Carb Sourdough Range may also fit within a ketogenic eating plan, depending on the individual product, portion size and the customer’s overall daily carbohydrate intake. Across both ranges, our products share several important qualities. They are: Low in carbohydrates High in protein High in fibre Made with no added sugar Made without artificial sweeteners Freezer friendly What Does “Low-Carb” Mean? Low-carb eating generally means reducing carbohydrate intake compared with a conventional diet. However, there is no single carbohydrate limit that everyone following a low-carb approach must use. Some people may simply choose lower-carbohydrate alternatives to everyday foods, while others may track their intake more closely. Our Low-Carb Sourdough Range has been developed for customers looking for a lower-carbohydrate alternative to conventional bread while maintaining greater flexibility within their overall eating plan. It may appeal to people who are: Reducing their overall carbohydrate intake Looking for an alternative to standard bread Choosing products that are high in protein and fibre Following a flexible, carb-conscious eating plan Looking for convenient, freezer-friendly bakery products The amount of carbohydrate varies between individual products, so customers should always check the nutritional information and serving size. DISCOVER THE LOW-CARB SOURDOUGH RANGE What Does “Keto” Mean? A ketogenic, or keto, eating plan generally involves keeping daily carbohydrate intake considerably lower than a broader low-carb approach. Ketogenic eating plans are often associated with an intake of around 20–50g of carbohydrates per day, although the exact amount varies depending on the individual and the approach being followed. For this reason, a product should not automatically be considered suitable for every person following keto simply because it is described as low-carb. Our Keto Range has been developed with ketogenic and very-low-carbohydrate eating plans in mind. In general, products within this range contain lower amounts of carbohydrate than products within our Low-Carb Sourdough Range. They are often chosen by customers who are: Following a ketogenic eating plan Monitoring their carbohydrate intake carefully Looking for very-low-carbohydrate bakery products Comparing carbohydrate values per product and serving Seeking high-protein and high-fibre alternatives to conventional bakery products Customers following a ketogenic eating plan should check the nutritional information for each individual product and consider how it fits within their overall daily carbohydrate intake. Not necessarily. Keto is generally considered a stricter form of low-carbohydrate eating. However, the boundary between the two is not fixed, and the terms do not describe completely separate groups of foods. Whether a particular product fits within a low-carb or ketogenic eating plan depends on: The carbohydrate content of the product The serving size The individual’s daily carbohydrate target Other foods eaten throughout the day The specific dietary approach being followed This means some products from our Low-Carb Sourdough Range may still fit within a ketogenic eating plan for some customers. Equally, choosing a product from our Keto Range does not mean it will automatically suit every ketogenic eating plan or every portion size. Checking the nutritional information remains essential. What Do Both Ranges Have in Common? Although the two ranges are developed with different levels of carbohydrate intake in mind, they share the same core product qualities. LOW IN CARBOHYDRATES Products across both ranges provide lower-carbohydrate alternatives to conventional bakery products. The exact amount of carbohydrate varies between products, so customers should compare the nutritional information and serving sizes when deciding which products best suit their needs. HIGH IN PROTEIN Products across both ranges are high in protein. Protein values vary by product, and full nutritional information is available on the relevant product page and packaging. HIGH IN FIBRE Both our Low-Carb Sourdough and Keto ranges are high in fibre. Fibre is an important part of the nutritional profile of our products and is clearly listed within the nutritional information for each item. NO ADDED SUGAR Products across both ranges are made with no added sugar where stated on the individual product. “No added sugar” means sugar has not been added as an ingredient during manufacture. This should not be confused with “sugar free”. Some ingredients naturally contain sugars, meaning small amounts of sugar may still be present in the finished product. Customers may therefore see naturally occurring sugars recorded within the nutritional table, even though sugar has not been added during manufacture. Please refer to the ingredients list and nutritional information for the individual product. NO ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS We do not use artificial sweeteners in our Low-Carb Sourdough or Keto ranges. Many low-carbohydrate and keto products rely on sweeteners to alter their flavour profile. Our products are made without artificial sweeteners, allowing the ingredients and bakery process to provide the flavour. FREEZER FRIENDLY Products across both ranges are freezer friendly, making it easy to stock up and use only what you need. Which Range Should You Choose? The best range for you depends on your personal eating plan, preferred portion size and overall daily carbohydrate intake. Our Low-Carb Sourdough Range may be a suitable place to start when you want to reduce carbohydrates while maintaining more flexibility. Our Keto Range has been developed with stricter, very-low-carbohydrate and ketogenic eating plans in mind. However, the name of the range should not be the only factor considered. Before selecting a product, check: Carbohydrates per serving The suggested portion size Protein and fibre values The ingredients list How the product fits into the rest of your daily food intake Full nutritional information is available on each product page. Frequently Asked Questions Is keto bread the same as low-carb bread? Keto bread is generally a form of low-carbohydrate bread, but it is usually developed with stricter carbohydrate limits in mind.
